Cycling Chic

While the rest of the world talks up their commitment to a more sustainable existence, and I continue to make my regular Monday morning promises to improve my general fitness, the people of Oslo are getting on with it. One of the most striking things about the city is how many people are riding around on bicycles.

And the striking thing about these people on their bikes is just how utterly cool they look.

People in my city who ride bikes are often dressed head to toe in lycra or, at the very least, riding knicks (tight shorts) and those funny little shoes that snap into the pedals. I don’t look particularly good in lycra and funny shoes and this is just one of the many excuses I have employed over the years to avoid getting fit.

But in Oslo, the rules say that you can wear whatever you like when you ride your bike, and that you don’t need the special shoes or the titanium road racer or even the physique and stamina of an athlete. You just need to get off your butt, stop making excuses, and get out there. Preferably in a gorgeous coat and a chic scarf.
