Journey into the Alps
By Amy Wyatt
19 December 2010

Today was magic! Possibly my favourite day so far. Boarded a boat for a leisurely cruise up Lake Lucerne to the sleepy inlet village of Weggis. A popular holiday resort with Swiss and German tourists, Weggis is a haven of tranquility famous for their wellness spas.
Before exploring Weggis we headed to the top of Mt Rigi, which rises 1800m. We took the cable car to Kaltbad which afforded some amazing views of Switzerland. From here it was a cogwheel train to the top of Mt Rigi. Photos cannot really do this place justice, the view of the Alps is something magical. Switzerland has such amazing natural beauty...the scenery quite often takes your breath away. Such natural beauty encourages people to be active, with many Swiss partaking in hiking or nordic walking on the many mountains.
The journey down from the top of Mt Rigi was equally as spectacular as the ascent. Rolling green hills, cows perched on the mountains, small wooden chalets built into the hills, amazing autumn-coloured trees and bright flowers. A leisurely cruise back to Weggis brings us to the Park Hotel Weggis. This hotel is so beautiful, like something out of a fairytale. A unique combination of old and new provides a relaxing escape from the hectic world we live in. Famous for their asiatic spa cottages and award winning restaurants, this truly was something special.
After an apertif in the Lalique caviar bar, we headed to the restaurant Sparks for a gastronomic dinner experience. An elegant restaurant with amazing chandeliers, heavy red velvet curtains and chair covers and fine silverware. An amazing meal followed; salad, a delicate broth with pea foam, fine cuts of chicken served on a bed of pumpkin risotto and vegetables followed by a delicious burnt custard with sorbet. This was enjoyed with local white and red wine. Savouring the last bite we were surprised to discover that the meal was not yet over, as they brought out herbal tea, coffee and exquisite petit fours.
With bellies bursting we retired to our luxurious rooms, overlooking the lake, for some much needed rest. A truly special stay in Weggis, only wish it could be longer. Hopefully one day I will return.

You know that desperate pannicky feeling you get when you are in love? Well I get that when I think about Switzerland and the fact that it is sitting their in all its beauty and I'm not there.
