Beautiful, Breathtaking Lucerne
By Amy Wyatt
21 December 2010

I am sitting in the first class compartment of the train on my way to Lucerne, a journey of only 45 minutes, and the scenery is breathtaking. Rolling green hills, cute wooden chalets, snow capped mountains in the distance. This is Switzerland. The sun is shining...what a brilliant day! Catching trains in Switzerland allows you to see so much of the countryside, without the traffic jams, airport queues and stress.

We arrive into Lucerne and a short walk takes us to our hotel, the Hotel Waldstatterhof, an old castle like hotel with traditional Swiss minimalist rooms. The service is efficient and friendly and the hotel is walking distance to Lake Lucerne. Unloading our bags we all head out to explore the city and find some lunch. A short walk brings us to the crowning glory of Lucerne- the magnificent Chapel Bridge and Octagonal Water Tower. Bright flowers line the sides of the bridge, the water glistens in the sun and swans swim gracefully by.

A restaurant along the banks of Lake Lucerne looks like the perfect place for lunch, complete with views of the Chapel Bridge and Baroque Church on the other side of the Lake. Lunch is a traditional pretzel of swiss cheese and ham accompanied with a glass of wine. Delicious!

The afternoon is spent at the Swiss Transport museum...not quite my cup of tea. Much more suited to families and transport buffs. With the visit over, it was time for shopping before dinner.

Tonight we visit a traditional Swiss theatre restaurant in the Old Town. We indulge in swiss cheese fondue, bratwurst sausages and potato rosti. The evening comes complete with kitch entertainment courtesy of cow bell playing, yodelling, horn blowing Swiss performers. Audience participation adds to the humour of the evening.
