Wilhelm Tell Express
By Therese Bruning
14 February 2011

The Wilhelm Tell Express is "express" in name only but certainly a pleasant way to get to Lucerne from Lugano.

Starting off by train, we travelled for two hours in first class comfort through tunnels and mountains and past picturesque villages, with the large panoramic windows allowing us make the most of the spectacular views. In a dream world we could ask the train driver to slow down in order to get "that" special shot - of which there were many (yes - impractical - I know). However, this is only the first part of the journey & something even better awaits.

On disembarking the train, we were met by a beautiful paddlesteamer, peeking at us through low cloud as it approached the edge of Lake Lucerne. If you ever got tired of viewing the gorgeous villages lakeside, backdropped by towering mountains, a substantial lunch, followed by coffee & choccies was also on offer to fill in the time. Alas - the low cloud did not make it ideal for scenic snaps on the day I travelled, but on a clear day, photo opportunities would abound.

Nearly 3 hours later, the lovely Lucerne came in to view. Although probably not the quickest route between the two cities, it was certainly an enjoyable leisurely few hours and another great way to experience the beautiful countryside.

I don't think I can ever get tired of the stunning scenery & sights of Switzerland (oh - and the Swiss chocolate - did I forget to mention the chocolate????) I can't wait to return to experience more of what it has to offer.
