Self-Guided Alpine Cycling
By Gerard Tellam
28 May 2012

From the moment I boarded my Thai airways flight from Brisbane I was pleasantly greeted and looked after by the courteous and attentive staff who made my flight from Brisbane to Zurich a truly pleasant and enjoyable experience.

It seems my Alpine Rhine Self Guided trip was intended to continue along the same parallels of enjoyment.

Wow, what a first day of cycling.

Caught the train from the picturesque town of Chur and marvelled at the Swiss countryside as we tracked alongside the Rhine River to Disentis. A truly enjoyable and breathtaking ride through the scenic route of local villages back dropped by the majestic snow capped Alps so universally associated with this part of the world.

The return trip was more arduous and challenging by bike but so so worth it as I was rewarded with the spectacular views of the snow capped mountains, the Rhine River, the crisp clean air, the lush green meadows, the forests, the sounds of the cow bells tinkering in the background and the sounds of the river as I rode alongside. Combined with the sound of the trains tooting as they climbed along the tracks alongside the flowing Rhine, the architecture of the houses and buildings made these sights even more captivating and overwhelming.

The initial 20 kms of the return bike ride from Disentis was along country tracks and I felt as though I was truly a part of the alpine experience riding alongside the Rhine River as it meandered through the mountains.

A striking natural scene along this route is the Rhine Canyon. After cycling the sharp incline I was able to stop and admire the view of the ravine below. I found I was constantly stopping to take in the impressive views and enjoy the moment.

All in all the cycling was just over 60 kms in total. I finished off the days cycling with a well deserved glass of local wine on the balcony of my hotel room. Once again this view was captivating and spectacular, made even more so by the backdrop of the Swiss Alps.
