9 Sleeps until the experience of a lifetime
By Amy Wyatt
20 September 2010

It all began a few weeks ago when I noticed an amazing opportunity to visit Switzerland and experience the Cinque Terre in Italy courtesy of Rail Europe, Thai Airways International and Switzerland Tourism. WOW! Sounds amazing right? All I had to do was write about a favourite destination...So with my fingers and toes crossed I submitted my entry with only a few days to go.
Fast forward to the 1st September and I am just about to leave for the day when I get the most amazing email...CONGRATULATIONS! You are the winner of the THAI Roving Reporter competition! OMG! Are you kidding...I have never won anything this amazing before.
So with only 9 sleeps to go I am now busily preparing to head off on the adventure of a lifetime. One of the things I am most looking forward to is experiencing Europe by rail. I have not been to Europe for more than 5 years and the last time I travelled was with Contiki...a typical rite of passage. Now that I am older and wiser, I look forward to learning more about the ease of rail travel through Europe. Such experiences will prove invaluable when helping to plan my clients European itineraries. I will finally be able to answer all those questions with confidence; how do I get between platforms, where does my luggage go, how do I find the train I need to catch? The list goes on...
I am also looking foward to seeing the beautiful scenery of Switzerland. I will be visiting Zurich; Lucerne; the picturesque village of Weggis on the banks of Lake Lucerne with Mt Rigi rising in the distance; and the ski resort of Engelberg. Along the way I will be doing some amazing excursions including a trip to the top of Mt Rigi and Mt Titlis and with some trepidation...a downhill bike ride from Gerschnialp to Engelberg! All those that know me would agree I am not the most co-ordinated (I have been known to crash into parked cars on rollerblades!) so this could be interesting!
And as if the trip is not amazing enough I will finishing this adventure with two amazing days in the Cinque Terre. I cannot wait to walk through the panoramic villages hugging the coastline and savour a little piece of "la dolce vita".
I will have my camera with me throughout to capture the amazing beauty of these two countries and look forward to reporting back about the amazing experiences ahead of me. Oh and let's not forget the amazing food and local wine I will encounter along the way...especially the Swiss chocolate :-)
